Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshni Davé.
Roshni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story begins with my parents, I credit them with instilling the importance of helping others. Growing up, I watched my parents selflessly help others despite their own struggles. I saw how these acts of kindness impacted the people involved in a positive way. I always knew I wanted to help people make positive changes for themselves and their families.
I started my freshman year at DePaul University as a psychology major in the hopes to learn more about human behavior. After the first few classes in developmental and abnormal psychology, I knew this was a subject that I was fascinated with. I started volunteering with organizations like KEEN Chicago and the Chicago Recovery Alliance which focused on adults and children struggling with various mental health issues and physical disabilities.
As I continued my undergraduate degree I knew that pursuing a career in psychology would align with my passion. After graduation, I had the opportunity to work in a residential treatment facility that focused on helping children and adolescents with a range of mental health disorders. This is where I learned first-hand about disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, eating disorder, self-injury, and suicidal thinking and how they impacted the everyday lives of these adolescents.
Watching them fight to understand their disorders, learn new ways to cope, and communicate their needs to others was inspiring. Experiences such as these motivated me to start my graduate program in Community Counseling. I started my post-graduate career working in a behavioral health hospital focusing on patients with severe eating disorders and self-injury issues.
Experience at the inpatient level of care also showed me how disorders such as mood, anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma impacted patients. This is where my area of focus began to take shape. Witnessing this population’s struggle to fight their disorders and society’s stigma, was devastating. I continued to build my skill set in order to help this population find their way to recovery and to build the life they had always dreamed of.
After working in inpatient care for a few years, I wanted to start a practice of my own. This is where I met Dr. Abbasi and Dr. Kazi of Northwest Psychiatry. Drs. Abbasi and Dr. Kazi have extensive experience in the treatment of various disorders. We shared the belief that in order to help our clients there should be a balance between therapeutic and psychiatric interventions. I was excited to join their team and continue to fulfill my passion to help others.
The practice was established to help people in the northwest suburbs have easy access to quality mental health services for various disorders.
